1962 Alps, Red Fire Bird III in Original Box

1962 Alps, Red Fire Bird III in Original Box

Alps manufactured three versions of their popular battery operated tin litho concept car Fire Bird III. One is red/white, the 2nd is gold, and the 3rd is this brilliant cherry red version. The red version is the most difficult to find of the three especially in high grade (near mint), complete with its original (and correct) box with insert.

The toy was based on an actual GM Pontiac concept vehicle produced in 1958 (see last photo). It's a very accurate rendition. Even the "jet logos" on the wheel covers are identical. The body is low and streamlined with two, side-by-side blue tinted plastic bubble cockpit canopy's in the center. It has a total of 7 tail fins. Quite frequently the side mounted fins are loose or missing. The tires are solid black rubber and the underside chassis is black.

In addition to its stop and go action it produces a loud squeal from the rear section. Simultaneously the green and red translucent engine hoods flash rapidly.

The box, as already mentioned, features a panel wide illustration of the actual toy. Front and rear panels show the vehicle with light emitted from the engine covers. Text covers the remainder of the box except for an illustration of the car enclosed inside the Roman numeral 3 on the side flaps. The insert is rectangular and is original to the toy.
